The reed is made up of two pieces of cane wrapped together. It is the part of the instrument that vibrates to make the sound.
The Bocal
The bocal is the most delicate part of the instrument. It is the metal piece that fits into the wing joint. The reed is placed on the end of the bocal.
The Bell
The bell fits on the top of your instrument. It is connected to the long joint.
The Wing Joint
The wing joint is the smaller of the two middle sections of the bassoon. It is the joint in which the bocal will be inserted. This can also be called the tenor joint
The Long Joint
This is the longer of the two middle joints on the bassoon. The bell fits in the top of this section.
The Boot
The boot is the bottom of the bassoon. Both the wing joint and the long joint fit into the boot. It is also the part of the bassoon where the seat strap will be attached.
The Seat Strap
The seat strap fits on the end of the boot joint. The player sits on this piece to keep the instrument off the ground and in proper playing position.
